Fabian Delph says he's joined Everton to be a leader as why he believes it's good to talk

Fabian Delph believes he can bring some much-needed additional leadership qualities to Everton while expressing what attracted him to join the Blues.

Club captain Phil Jagielka departed Goodison Park after 12 years service this summer and many observers have commented on a need for Everton to have some more vocal characters in the side.

Delph , 29, will certainly bring with dressing room footage from Manchester City's fly-on-the-wall documentary All or Nothing highlighting his forthright views in front of his manager and team-mates.

He said: “Obviously I'm one of the older players now so I'd like to think I'm relatively experienced so hopefully I can help the younger lads and put my marker down and push the lads in the right direction.

“Ever since I was 18 years old at Leeds United I've been quite vocal and it's been in me.

“It's not something you can turn on or off. Even last season I was one of the most vocal ones in the changing room before the game and I'll always be like that to my last game played.”

Delph believes that having have leaders in the dressing room is a crucial factor for any top team.

He said: “It's massive. I think it's important for everybody to play their part.

“It probably comes a lot easier for me as I'm one of the older players. It's definitely something that a successful team needs.

“You don't have to be the best player in the team to have an effect people but if you've got leadership qualities you can drive the team to be successful, set your standards high and to have good habits. That's definitely one thing I'll be looking to bring here.”

Delph added: “I just think that the winning mentality is massive, having good habits. In the training sessions, everyone needs to be on it, we need that winning mentality in training.

“We need to prepare properly off the pitch, away from the club, we need to make sure we're recovering properly, and we just need to be really on it.

“We need to be heading in the same direction. There are no egos here, everyone works really hard, there's a great ethic and the staff are fantastic.

“If everybody aims at the same goals, and heads in the same direction, I'm pretty confident that the club can go somewhere.”

Delph started in Manchester City's Premier League game against Everton at the Etihad last season and despite winning 3-1 he was impressed with what Marco Silva's side had to offer.

He said: “We played against them last season it was very difficult, especially at the Etihad.

“I've seen a group of players that looked like they were heading in the right direction.

“The way they play, they're a possession-based team, with a high work ethic, the manager seems in instil in them, the previous club he was at seemed to be very similar so it was really attractive to me and I'm just happy to be here.”
