FA urged to act on Bernardo Silva’s “offensive” tweet as Kick It Out issue statement

Anti racism group Kick It Out have called on the FA to act on Bernardo Silva’s “offensive” tweet.

Football Association chiefs are deciding whether to take further action after Portugal midfielder Bernardo posted an image appearing to compare City team mate Benjamin Mendy to a mascot for a Spanish chocolate peanut brand.

Bernardo has stressed the tweet was a joke with his friend and team mate while he also deleted the tweet and then wrote: “Can’t even joke with a friend these days… you guys.”

It could be seen as playing to an offensive racial stereotype and quickly prompted a fierce backlash on Twitter .

A Kick It Out statement said: “Racist stereotypes are never acceptable as 'banter', and we're shocked that someone who is a role model to millions has failed to understand the discriminatory nature of his post.

"The FA have been notified and we believe that retrospective action should be taken, including mandatory education - which is vital to challenge offensive behaviour such as this."

The FA are likely to make a decision on Monday as to whether to pursue the incident and investigate further.

The FA, Premier League and EFL met with Twitter bosses last week to discuss problems and abuse on social media.
