FA to investigate Hillsborough 'overcrowding' during Newcastle's clash with Sheffield Wednesday

The Football Association will conduct an investigation into reports of overcrowding at Hillsborough on Saturday evening. A bumper 4,500-strong away end roared Newcastle United on as they lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round.

However, social media was rife with Magpies supporters post-match criticising the lack of stewarding and "dangerous" layout inside the ground. The Leppings Lane End, where Newcastle fans were stationed, is the scene of the Hillsborough disaster in April 1989, when 97 Liverpool fans tragically lost their lives.

The Newcastle United Supporters' Trust are also appealing to supporters for information.

A brief statement read: "As with Leeds last January, any Newcastle fans involved in the situation below, or any situation similar, please email board@nufctrust.co.uk with details of what you witnessed. Anyone involved please email board with details of your experience."

The FA will speak to both clubs as well as the police after becoming aware of fans' claims online. Hillsborough will be used again for the FA Cup fourth round when Wednesday take on Fleetwood Town.

Sheffield Wednesday have been approached for comment.
