FA to consider scrapping extra-time from FA Cup replays

The FA want to consult supporters about scrapping extra-time from FA Cup replays.

All ties before the fifth round go to a replay if the first match is drawn and, if the game is still level after another 90 minutes, extra-time is played.

However Andy Ambler, the FA’s director of professional game relations, wants to speak to fan groups about the prospect of removing extra-time from replays and sending games straight to penalties instead.

Given there are no replays from the fifth round onwards, extra-time would remain for those matches, but it could be introduced for all ties before then.

The Carabao Cup scrapped extra-time from all its games this season, sending matches straight to penalties.

“One thing I would like to consult with fan groups on is the idea of removing extra-time after a replay, as the EFL have done this year,” said Ambler. “That’s something for the clubs and the fans to have a view on, and would need to be considered by the FA Cup committee and the FA board.”
