FA tell Premier League how to end the season in move that will have huge impact on Leeds United

Leeds United will be hoping for more clarity in the coming days over the end of the 2019/20 Championship season.

The EFL are waiting on the Premier League to come to a decision over the end of their campaign before committing to plans to end the Championship, League One and League Two campaigns.

The Premier League have been holding regular meetings over video conference call, with the latest of which taking place on Monday, following the Prime Minister's address to the nation over easing of lockdown rules on Sunday night.

Further to Boris Johnson's statement, a 50-page document has revealed that football will be allowed to return no earlier than June 1, but will have to be played behind closed doors because of social distancing guidelines remaining in place.

That means if the season is to finish, clubs will have to play the final games without fans.

Premier League clubs are believed to still be split over whether or not to finish the season in neutral venues. No official call has yet been made on the plans and whether they will be used to finish the season.

According to The Times , the Premier League is to ask the government to reconsider its neutral grounds directive at a request of more than half its clubs.

The Independent are reporting that clubs were told at the very start of the meeting by the Football Association that the season must be settled by 'sporting merit'.

That means a method like points-per-game or the one used in France may come into play if the season can not be completed.

The report also claims voiding the season 'remains completely off the table' and the FA will not sanction 'no relegation'.

That would be great news for Leeds United, who would be promoted on a points-per-game basis and would be open to ending the season to cement their place at the top of the Championship table too.
