The Football Association could and should have done more to keep children safe from predators, a major report into sexual historical abuse has found.
The independent review into historical sexual abuse in the sport found that “institutional failing” by the FA meant children had not been properly protected for a period of 15 years.
The independent review into historical sexual abuse between 1970 and 2005, conducted by Clive Sheldon QC, was published on Wednesday by theFA.
It found English football’s governing body should have done more to keep children safe following high-profile convictions of child sexual abusers in the summer of 1995 until May 2000.
“This was an institutional failing by the FA, for which there is no excuse,” the review stated.
