An investigation into alleged match-fixing in the Welsh Premier League has been launched by the Football Association of Wales.
The FAW began its inquiry after it was alerted to suspicious betting patterns as Port Talbot lost 5-0 at their fellow strugglers Rhyl at the weekend.
A spokesman for the FAW said: “We have been made aware of the allegations made. We have started an investigation and are working with the relevant authorities.”
According to Walesonline, Port Talbot’s directors have called a meeting with their players on Wednesday evening when the claims will be discussed. Port Talbot want to know if any of their players were involved in any betting.
Footballers in the league sign a declaration at the start of the season preventing them from putting money on games. The FAW employs a company called Sportradar to monitor matches in the Welsh Premier League.
A spokesman for Port Talbot said: “At the moment we are aware of the allegations and we will be conducting an internal investigation and working with the FAW in regard to it.”
He stressed: “The club has a zero tolerance policy with anything of this nature.”
The FAW said no Rhyl players were under investigation. Rhyl had not previously won in 17 matches, with their last victory coming against Airbus UK in October.
