From then on the home side's heads seemed to go down and they allowed Villa to stroke the ball about, seemingly at will, so much so it looked like they were on the training ground. Gabriel Agbonlahor was brought on just after half-time and this proved a good move by Alex McLeish, as the Villa striker notched with a fine finish just after the hour mark. With 12 minutes to go a fine individual goal by Ciaran Clark put Villa in control. Scott McGleish got a consolation goal in the final minute and then was given a chance to get another from the penalty spot following a hand ball by Stephen Warnock. A capacity crowd at White Hart Lane, including 5,000 travelling fans, saw Jermain Defoe open the scoring midway through the first half. The Yorkshire side made a brighter start to the second half and just after the hour mark Giles Barnes had a great chance to equalise but blasted the ball over the bar. After surviving a couple of scares the visitors took the lead just after the half hour mark when Goodwillie prodded home a loose ball following a corner. They held the lead until twenty minutes from the end when a wonderful individual goal by Hatem Ben Arfa got the home side back in the game. It was Messi-esque as the French international picked the ball up 40 yards out before setting off on a jinky, bamboozaling dance through the Blackburn defence then firing the ball home from six yards out. The Magpies continued to push for a winner and they got it deep into injury time when Gutierrez exchanged passes with Best before clipping the ball into the net. Firstly he was jeered relentlessly by the home supporters and then the Wolverhampton Wanderers' captain landed awkwardly and limped off just after the half-hour mark. In a poor match the only moment of quality came in the dying seconds when Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle pulled off an outstanding double save to deny the visitors.
