FA Cup third round: Chesterfield 3-3 West Brom, Blackpool 4-1 Nottingham Forest – as it happened

Thank you so much for joining me for the Clockwatch this afternoon! What an amazing 10 matches we witnessed with a few upsets mixed in. This is not the end of the FA Cup coverage today with Luke McLaughlin on the Sheffield Wednesday v Newcastle game which kicks off at 6. I will also return later for Liverpool’s match against Wolves, until then enjoy your bratwursts!

Bournemouth are having a rocky season, being 16th in the Premier League and now knocked out of the FA Cup following a 4-2 loss to Burnley. Their manager Gary O’Neil, had a frank assessment when he spoke to BBC Sport: “It was disappointing, you can’t legislate for individual errors like we’ve made. The rest of the performance isn’t important because the silly three goals we conceded are irreparable. If you’re going to concede goals like that you can’t win football matches. We need to improve quickly, there’s a lot going on and we need to improve quick.”

What a thriller it was between Chesterfield and West Brom! The non league side almost caused an upset as they were leading 3-2 until the 93rd minute when Thomas-Asante equalised. For all the action from that one have a read of Will Unwin’s report from the Technique Stadium:

Brighton’s Mac Allister, who recently won the World Cup with Argentina, added a brace to Brighton’s 5-1 win over Middlebrough and he told BBC 5 Live post-match: “To be honest I wanted to come back, the club gave me to the fifth but I came back earlier because I wanted to train, play and share my medal with the club. I feel very happy to be a part of this club and to be in this city so I will continue to give it my all.”

It was not an easy afternoon for Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough as they were swept aside 5-1 by Brighton. Read up on all the details from that match with this report from Louise Taylor who was at Riverside:

I was caught up in all the goals earlier but I picked up a bit of Arsenal team news which could interest some Gooners reading. Emile Smith Rowe could be available for selection for Arsenal’s FA Cup match against Oxford on Monday.

The next batch of FA Cup games are about to begin. Brentford v West Ham, Coventry v Wrexham, Luton Town v Wigan Athletic and Grimsby Town v Burton all kick-off at 5.30pm. We are covering the 6pm kick-off between Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle live. You can catch that coverage with Luke McLaughlin here:

I never knew bratwursts were so popular! “Just to drop a fly in the mustard, as it were, I’d like to mention that what I knew as a bratwurst in Germany is a somewhat different sausage to what is often (though not always) sold as bratwurst in the US,” Sarah says. “In the interest of scientific and culinary endeavour, my American friends should compare Johnsonville (previously mentioned) to Boar’s Head, for instance. But for now just pass me the bun, sausage and condiments- I’m getting hungry!” So am I, sadly I don’t have any bratwursts in the house!

“The great Bratwurst debate,” Julian says. “I have to go with the German original, one of the joys of going to a match in Germany, along with a cold beer.” Simple but affective.

Full-time! Blackpool 4-1 Nottingham Forest

Well after last season’s heroics Nottingham Forest have an early exit at the hands of a shock defeat to Blackpool.

Full-time! Millwall 0-2 Sheffield United

Two first half goals from Jebbison and Bogle see Sheffield through to the next round of the FA Cup.

GOAL! Blackpool 4-1 Nottingham Forest (Yates 90+2)

Yates was brought on and he gets a consolation for the Premier League side with a strong header.

PENALTY! Ipswich Town 4-1 Rotherham United (Burns, 87)

I’m unsure what it was given for with no details, I’ll bring you that as soon as I know. But it’s another penalty for Ipswich and they are crusing.

GOAL! Middlesbrough 1-5 Brighton (Undav, 88)

Undav was subbed on just minutes ago but he slots home. His shot hits the post and goes in to blow Middlesbrough away.

GOAL! Blackpool 4-0 Nottingham Forest (Yates, 87)

This is an absolute shocker of a result for Nottingham Forest who find themselves 4-0 down after a great run sees Yates beat the keeper.

“Kalbratwurst is what they were called in Antwerp when I lived there in the early 70’s,” Michael Gittins says. “You could get them from chippies with frites and mayonnaise or those hole in the wall outlets. Think they are a German sausage originally.” Yeah I too think they are German, anyone correct us if we’re wrong!

GOAL! Shrewsbury 1-0 Sunderland (Pennington, 81)

This could be a late heartbreaker from Pennington as he breaks the deadlock late on. He rises above the rest from a corner to head home.

GOAL! Ipswich Town 3-1 Rotherham United (Ladapo, 79)

Ipswich are banishing their bad luck here! They have come to life in this second half, this time Ladapo hits home.

Boreham Wood kept pushing throughout this game and they have their equaliser to show for it. It’s a beautiful header from Ndlovu!

PENALTY! Ipswich Town 2-1 Rotherham (Chaplin, 74)

Harding has his shirt pulled in the area and Chaplin steps up to take. It is a clean penalty to put Ipswich ahead, will they shake their third round bad luck?

Those waiting on an upset, which we all love in the FA Cup, Chesterfield are still holding onto their 3-2 lead. They are in their 73rd minutes so there is still time for West Brom to get back into it.

“More greetings from The Colonies Mary,” James says. “Hello from Louisville, Kentucky! A lot to keep up with, that’s for sure. I’m keen on the Hull-Fulham festivities in Yorkshire. We like our brats here too, by the way, although my Wisconsin friends don’t add anything to the pre-grilling beer boil. And Johnsonville seems to be the preferred brand. I like mine with a little grey mustard…doesn’t have to be Grey Poupon…any decent grey mustard will do.” Well Hull City and Fulham still remains 1-0 in Fulham’s favour.

GOAL! Blackpool 3-0 Nottingham Forest (Hamilton, 71)

It’s a simple cross and Hamilton drills it past the keeper. A clean and easy goal and Steve Cooper will be watching on through his hands at this point surely! A different picture form last season when they knocked out Arsenal and Leicester.

“As a West Brom fan, I have to say I’m perfectly relaxed about Chesterfield beating us today, which tells you all you need to know about the importance of the FA Cup these days,” Adam says. “It’s hard not to sound patronising, but beating us means a lot more to Chesterfield than beating them does to us.” Any West Brom fans out there agree?

GOAL! Fleetwood 2-1 QPR (Omochere, 67)

Fleetwood may have gone 1-0 down but they are firing now, a nice slot home for Omochere.

There is only one match out of the ten 3pm kick-offs which remains at 0-0, Shrewsbury v Sunderland still stands in a deadlock.

GOAL! Blackpool 2-0 Nottingham Forest (Poveda, 64)

Nottingham Forest were having all the shots but Blackpool have silenced their growing momentum and double their lead! Poveda gets the goal just moments after an effort sailed over the bar.

The bratwursts strike again! “Hi from a native Sconnie (grew up in Green Bay - go Packers!),” says Peter Pearson. “The trick with brats is you boil them in beer with onions and garlic before you grill them. You might also like to try fried cheese curds.”

GOAL! Bournemouth 2-4 Burnley (Benson, 57)

Burnley score on the counter attack, Kelly doesn’t see Benson who bends it round the keeper to add to this goal fest!

GOAL! Middlesbrough 1-3 Brighton (Mac Allister, 58)

It is an absolute screamer from World Cup winner Mac Allister, he flicks it into the corner to all but sew up the match.

Dennis should have scored for Nottingham Forest but it is a great save! Dennis is threaded a great ball in the box but it’s pushed wide, Nottingham Forest trailing 1-0 to Blackpool.

Just managing to take a breather from this thrilling opening to the second halves! The biggest story is Chesterfield being 3-2 ahead over West Brom? Can they hold on? Chesterfield fans and neutrals will want to see a non league club beat a Championship side.

Chris says: “I’m astonished that you can track everything! How do you do it? 10 screens and intravenous caffeine?!?” Commentaries, Twitter and Google are all my glamorous assistants today! And of course copious amounts of caffeine.

GOAL! Bournemouth 2-3 Burnley (Solanke, 48)

Solanke heads home after the ball pounces into his pass. Game on! Burnley must have thought they were in a good position but they can get a bit nervous now.

Apologies too, I got a fun fact wrong earlier. Ipswich Town have been passed the third round in the FA Cup but not since 2010!

PENALTY! Ipswich Town 1-1 Rotherham United (Washington, 47)

Washington was tripped in the box which saw the referee point to the spot, he then slotted home to equalise.

The games are getting back underway! I’ll be bringing you all the updates as they come.

I’m telling you these bratwursts are causing quite a stir! Mark is the latest to get in touch about them and says: “Hi Sarah, as a Mancunian who has lived in Wisconsin for twenty years, I have an alternative perspective to Eric: a couple of beers followed by a brat, with its crisp skin, spicy flavouring and (ideally) lightly toasted bun (which is different than either hot dog or hamburger bun), is the way to go.” I think I would opt for beers first too, soak up the alcohol with a great snack.

“Sarah, good morning from rainy California,” Mary Waltz says. “We are just waking up for breakfast so it’s prosciutto and spring onions omelettes. We are trying to eat a bit healthier, per doctors orders, so instead of chips it’s roasted brussels sprouts, olive oil, salt.” I would much prefer sprouts over chips, that does make me slightly strange but there you go! Enjoy"!

It is safe to say non league side Chesterfield are happy about being ahead again Championship team West Brom!

The scores on the doors at the break:

Hull City 0-1 Fulham Kurzawa, 37

Middlesbrough 1-2 Brighton Akpom, 13, Groß, 8, Lallana 29

GOAL! Fleetwood 0-1 QPR (Field, 37)

There’s finally a goal in this one to break Fleetwood hearts, they haven’t gone past the third round of the FA Cup before. Field controls well to beat the keeper.

GOAL! Bournemouth 1-2 Burnley (Zaroury, 39)

VAR had a look at the goal for offside but it stands to put the Championship side 2-1 ahead against Premier League side Bournemouth.

GOAL! Hull City 0-1 Fulham (Kurzawa, 37)

The chances were flowing and so it was a matter of time for the visitors. Kurzawa slices home to put them ahead before half-time.

GOAL! Millwall 0-2 Sheffield United (Bogle, 36)

It takes a huge deflection but Bogle has scored, the deflection saw the ball loop around the keeper!

A huge chance for Fulham’s Pereira, he hits a half volley which sails over the cross bar. The missed chance mean their match against Hull City remain 0-0 for now.

Eric Peterson has got in touch and said: “Good morning from Pittsburgh! Having been born and raised in Minnesota, I’m loathe to say much nice about neighbouring Wisconsin’s sports, but I’ll vouch for the Brewers bratwursts - properly done, you skip the pregame beers so you have the appetite for a couple of those. (As an Evertonian, the thought of Southampton finding good form one weekend before their visit to Goodison has made my present-day appetite evaporate entirely.)” I need to try these bratwursts, they sound great. The Everton Southampton match will be a tasty one too!

GOAL! Middlesbrough 1-2 Brighton (Lallana, 29)

It’s a tense game and Brighton are back ahead! Lallana chests the ball in the back of the net after a scrappy cross.

Do get in touch and let me know your thoughts on the matches this afternoon and the snacks that are getting you through!

Nottingham Forest have responded well to conceding with chances, in particular through Sam Surridge. He hits the side netting with his latest attempt, feels an equaliser will be coming.

GOAL! Millwall 0-1 Sheffield United (Jebbison, 23)

It is a well worked goal through the team, Jebbison gets it in the box and tricks the keeper. The shot-stopper thinks he is going to cross across goal but goes for the shot himself and gets it.

Lots of goals but there are still fixtures yet to find an opener. Hull City v Fulham, Fleetwood v QPR, Ipswich Town v Rotherham, Milwall v Sheffield and Shrewsbury v Sunderland are all still 0-0.

GOAL! Chesterfield 1-2 West Brom (Grant, 17)

Well what a game we have on our hands! Karlan Grant pokes home to put West Brom ahead once again. Grant made a break down the left, takes a touch in the box and slots it past the keeper.

Hull City should be 1-0 up against Fulham after some clumsy defence saw a good chance but it is fluffed, a lively start to a lot of these 3pm kick-offs!

We are just two minutes in but Dominic Salenki has already had an early chance for Bournemouth but it has gone wide, an exciting start to their match against Burnley.

All the 3pm kick-offs are getting underway, are you ready? Strap in for all the updates.

You want more reading before kick-off I hear you say? Well you are in luck. Jonathan Liew was at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium to bring you all the action from Leicester’s 1-0 win over Gillingham, give it a read:

“I’m afraid it’s just a cup of coffee right now, Sarah, seeing as it’s still not 10am,” Joe Pearson in Indianapolis says. “But my favourite stadium snack was a bratwurst at a Milwaukee Brewers game. Heaven!” Oh that does sounds like heaven, though I can imagine quite messy depending on the choice of topping.

Do you want to catch up with earlier action? Of course you do! Have a read of David Hytner’s report below who attended the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Spurs 1-0 win over Portsmouth.

I have also grabbed my second coffee of the day so I am fully equipped for the (hopefully) goal fest afternoon. The question is how many coffees is too many? I’m sure I’ll find out.

Phew that was a lot of team news and results! I’ve managed to grab myself some snacks for the action packed afternoon, what is your go to for football? The final result to bring you from the earlier kick-offs is a 2-0 win for Reading over Watford. Kelvin Abrefa stuck in first half injury time and Shane Long sealed the win in full time injury time.
