FA Cup rule change compounds Leeds United travel chaos as broadcaster request fulfilled

Leeds United are no strangers to FA Cup upsets, particularly in the Third Round of the competition.

Last year's premature exit at the hands of League Two Crawley Town was witnessed on the BBC, while previous ties against the likes of Histon and Sutton United have also been broadcast on free-to-air television.

The only saving grace last January, was that thousands of Whites fans had not travelled down to East Sussex to witness the team roll over for their fourth tier opponents.

Next month, Leeds face Premier League opposition in the cup with a trip to high-flying West Ham United.

Fortunately, supporters are permitted in stadiums this time around and there will be a travelling contingent of approximately 9,000 making the journey to the London Stadium in the second week of January.

For those watching the team at home, the game will be aired on ITV.

There does appear to be one problem, though. Due to rail service disruption on the East Coast mainline, there will be fewer services bound for the capital.

Those which are still running are also subject to long delays with operating company London North Eastern Railway predicting up to 60 minutes of additional journey time due to trains being forced to divert around scheduled engineering works.

Compounding the misery of fans whose chosen mode of transport will be rail, ITV's request to bring forward kick-off has been granted.

Initially, the game was scheduled to begin at 2:15pm, which was already ambitious for supporters to journey down in time for.

Now, kick-off will take place at 2pm on Sunday January 9, 2022, fifteen minutes earlier than originally planned.

This is to accommodate ITV's broadcast schedule, which could potentially be impacted by a rule change in the FA Cup this season.

Instead of replays, ties which are drawn after 90 minutes will go immediately to extra-time and penalties, if required.

This is to ease fixture congestion amid the recent postponement of matches throughout the Football League due to positive COVID-19 cases within squads.
