FA Cup replay ordered despite 3-0 win after Exeter make costly substitute gaffe

The FA Cup first round replay between Exeter City and Bradford City must be replayed - despite the Grecians winning the tie 3-0.

That is because Exeter used six substitutes - one more than is permitted - in a game which finished goalless in 90 minutes before the Devon side ran out comprehensive winners in extra-time.

The Grecians won thanks to goals from Matt Jay (two) and Nigel Atangana in the extra allotted 30 minutes.

However, while the competition rules allows for up to five substitutes to be made, Exeter manager Matt Taylor then made a sixth at the start of extra-time, with Josh Key going on for Sam Nombe.

Under FA Cup rules this season clubs can bring on five players during a game, including extra time, with a sixth only allowed for a concussion.

The FA released a statement on Twitter on Thursday lunchtime, saying: "An extraordinary incident report was submitted by the match referee which stated that Exeter City had used a sixth substitute during their Emirates FA Cup First Round Proper Replay against Bradford City on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.

"The FA conducted an investigation and referred all of its information to the Professional Game Board [PGB] in accordance with the rules of the competition.

"After considering all of its options, and taking into account all of the relevant factors, the PGB agreed that the result of the match should not stand.

"The PGB deemed that the most appropriate action would be for the match to be replayed in its entirety and has ordered for this to take place at Exeter City’s St James Park on Tuesday, November 30 at 7.45pm."

There were fears that Exeter may be booted out of the competition following the gaffe. But those worries have been allayed slightly with a replay now being ordered.

Amazingly, the rematch will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this season.

They played out a goalless draw on the opening day of the League Two season at St James' Park. They then drew 1-1 at Valley Parade in early November in the original first round cup tie, before the eventful but ultimately futile replay in Devon earlier this week.

Winners of the replay will net £22,629 and travel to League One side Cambridge in round two.

The second round of the world's oldest cup competition takes place from December 3-6 with nine non-league sides hoping to reach the prestigious third round.
