FA Cup prize money for 2020-21 halved due to financial impact of coronavirus crisis

The FA have announced that the prize money for winning each round of the FA Cup has been halved for next season as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

After a 2-1 victory against Chelsea on Saturday, this year's winners Arsenal are thought to have taken home a cool £3.6m, with the Blues receiving £1.8m for finishing runners-up.

Next year, however, the winners will earn just £1.8m, with the runners-up given £900,000.

The amount awarded becomes greater the further through the competition side progress, with quarter-final winners, for instance, receiving £360,000.

The FA have also confirmed the dates for the opening rounds, with the competition due to start on Tuesday September 1, and they say there will be no replays to help with the fixture congestion caused by the season starting late.

A statement read: "The list of accepted clubs and round exemptions has been released, while the early draws for the extra preliminary and preliminary rounds will be released on Tuesday 18 August.

"In order to assist in easing pressure on the football schedule, there will be no replays for the 2020-21 season in the qualifying competition. The schedule for the competition proper will be released in due course.

"After two seasons of record levels of prize funds, the Emirates FA Cup prize fund has returned back in line with 2017-18 levels due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic."

Arsenal's FA Cup win has had huge financial implications at a crucial time as manager Mikel Arteta looks to fund his summer rebuild.

Whilst they are not benefitting from the riches of Champions League football, Europa League qualification brings plenty of income for the Gunners.

They will earn £2.6million just for entering the Europa League group stage, with a further £7.5million of gate receipts expected if fans are able to enter the Emirates for those three group games.
