FA Cup draw LIVE! Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool learn fourth-round fate

LIVE: FA Cup fourth round draw - (Getty Images)

FA Cup draw LIVE!

The FA Cup fourth round draw takes place tonight as Premier League and EFL clubs will discover their fates. There will be a new name on the trophy this season after holders Crystal Palace were knocked out by non-league Macclesfield in what is, perhaps, the greatest shock in competition's history. The National League North side are the lowest-ranked team left and will be eyeing another plum tie.

Arsenal, the record FA Cup winners, are safely through as their bid to land an unprecedented quadruple remains on track, while Chelsea will hope to avoid an exit at this stage of the competition for a second season in succession. Some big names are missing from the fourth round draw after both Manchester United and Tottenham suffered losses at home over the weekend, with the third round delivering on its promise of drama.

Last season's beaten finalists Manchester City put TEN past Exeter to progress, and the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle and Brighton can begin to eye a long cup run. Former England internationals Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole will carry out the proceedings. Follow the FA Cup fourth round draw live below!

Man United and Tottenham crash out

18:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The season goes from bad to worse for Manchester United and Tottenham after crashing out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.

Man United were beaten 2-1 at home by Brighton on Sunday, while Spurs lost to Aston Villa by the same scoreline around 24 hours prior.

It means the Red Devils will play a maximum of 40 games across all competitions this season as the pressure builds on Spurs boss Thomas Frank.

Chelsea cruise as Man City score TEN

18:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Liam Rosenior's first game in charge of Chelsea ended with victory over Championship side Charlton.

However, while the Blues scored five in the London derby, that was only half of what Manchester City managed in their third round tie against Exeter.

Antoine Semenyo marked his City debut with a goal as Pep Guardiola's side ran riot against League One opposition.

Arsenal through

18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

For the first time since the 2022-23 season, Arsenal have reached the fourth round of the FA Cup following a comfortable 4-1 win over Portsmouth yesterday afternoon.

The Gunners fell behind very early at Fratton Park, but Gabriel Martinelli's hat-trick ensured Mikel Arteta's side remain on track to add to their success in this competition.

The holders are out! History was made at the weekend with Macclesfield beating Crystal Palace at home.

Who is conducting the draw?

18:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tonight’s FA Cup fourth round draw is taking place before the third round tie between Liverpool and Barnsley.

Two former England internationals, and Liverpool players, will be on hand to draw the teams in Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole.

Of course, the 2006 final is often remembered as the 'Steven Gerrard final' after Gerrard's heroics in the penalty shootout win over West Ham.

Meanwhile, Cole is a two-time FA Cup winner having lifted the famous trophy with Chelsea in 2006-07 and 2009-10.

Fixture postponement

18:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Liverpool vs Barnsley is NOT the final FA Cup third round tie to be completed.

Salford City were due to host Swindon Town on Saturday but the match had to be called off because of a frozen pitch.

The tie has since been rearranged for January 20, meaning Salford and Swindon will face each other twice in three days.

FA Cup third round shock

The FA Cup third round weekend started with a shock result at the Racecourse Ground as Championship side Wrexham beat Premier League opposition in Nottingham Forest on penalties after a pulsating 3-3 draw.

Arthur Okonkwo was Wrexham’s hero as he saved from Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson in the shootout.

Wayne Rooney sends touching message after Crystal Palace upset

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Wayne Rooney congratulated his younger brother, John, after he led Macclesfield to FA Cup victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

John, five years Wayne’s junior, is in his first managerial job but outfoxed Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace, winning 2-1 after goals from Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts cancelled out Yeremy Pino’s late consolation.

It is, statistically, the biggest FA Cup upset of all time. Macclesfield and Crystal Palace are separated by 117 places in the football pyramid, the largest ever disparity in an FA Cup victory.

It is also the first time the competition’s holder has been knocked out by a non-league side since Crystal Palace themselves did so in 1909, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wayne, himself an FA Cup winner as a player, was overcome with emotion at the full-time whistle, shedding a tear as he spoke to BBC Sport.

VAR update

17:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

As was the case for the third round ties,VAR will not be in use during the fourth round ties. Though it will come in for the fifth round onwards.

A statement via the FA reads: "Video Assistant Referees (VAR) and Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) will not be utilised in the third and fourth rounds of the 2025-26 Emirates FA Cup.

"VAR and SAOT were not in operation until the fifth round last season, and this will continue to be the case during the current edition of the competition.

"VAR will be used for every tie from this season’s fifth round onwards, and this ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs in the third and fourth rounds.

"SAOT will be active from the fifth round onwards at all matches taking place in Premier League stadiums, due to the technology and infrastructure that it requires.

"Goal-line technology will be operational from the third round onwards for all fixtures hosted by Premier League and EFL Championship clubs."

No more FA Cup replays

17:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A reminder that there are no replays in the FA Cup, so any ties that are level after 90 minutes now go to extra time and then penalties.

It was a controversial decision made back in April 2024 as part of a new six-year agreement between the FA and the Premier League, with "changes to the calendar driven by the expanded Uefa competitions" cited as the main reason in the aftermath of the significant revamps of the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and Club World Cup.

Despite initial EFL complaints, the FA insisted that the move had the support of all parties concerned.

How does the draw work?

17:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Unlike draws for European competitions, there are no seedings for the FA Cup draw. No teams can be kept apart which means Arsenal could get Chelsea and Manchester City can draw Manchester United, for example.

Macclesfield flying flag for non-league

17:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

There were three non-league teams in the FA Cup third round.

Now, one remains ahead of the fourth round draw after Weston-super-Mare were narrowly beaten by Grimsby, while Boreham Wood were thumped at home by Burton.

The journey does continue for Macclesfield after their shock win over Crystal Palace.
