FA Cup brawl between players and fans sees fixture abandoned in injury time

An FA Cup tie had to be abandoned shortly before the end of normal time after players and fans clashed in shocking scenes.

The incident occurred in the final stages of a preliminary round game between Mossley and Lower Breck at Mossley's Seel Park.

Eighth tier Mossley, who play in the Northern Premier League Division One West, were leading 2-0 against their ninth tier opponents with injury time approaching when the action was suddenly halted.

Behind one of the goals there were clashes between home fans and Lower Breck players which made for unsavoury viewing with some spectators entering the pitch.

Social media footage has emerged of images and videos from the incident.

After a short delay referee Steven Lennon then blew to confirm the game had been abandoned with the final few minutes not being played out.

Gary Moore, Lower Breck coach, wrote a post on the club's Facebook page last night saying: "Myself, skipper Mick Douglas and our counterparts from Mossley were advised of the reasons for the game to be abandoned.

"We will make comment once the referee report is issued."

It is unclear whether the original result will stand, considering there was little time left to play in the match. An extreme option, and seemingly one that neither club would wish for, is for a replay.

The winners of preliminary round games pocket £1,444 with losers netting £481 - a much-needed boost to the coffers at a time when non-league clubs are still recovering from the huge financial hit of the pandemic.

Upon submission of the referee's report, the FA will then address the matter and if necessary hand out punishments.

The scenes in this game came just days after the horrendous events in the French league, in a top flight match between Nice and Marseille.

Marseille's midfielder and former West Ham player Dimitri Payet was hit by a bottle and threw it back into the crowd, causing fans to storm the pitch.

Nice's players returned to the pitch after a delay, but Marseille's did not. The match was abandoned and both clubs and those supporters who entered the field have since been chastised for their actions.
