FA Council confirms end of season for non-league, women's and grassroots football

The FA Council have ratified the decision to cancel the remainder of the football season for all non-league divisions below the National League.

The FA announced last month that steps three to seven of the National League system, as well as all women’s football below the Championship, would have their seasons ended and effectively declared null and void because of the coronavirus outbreak.

A statement on Thursday said the FA Council’s vote was “overwhelmingly in favour of ratifying the decision”, which also applies to grassroots football. Results have been expunged and no promotions or relegations will be applied.

It means that only the Premier League, Football League, Women’s Super League, Women’s Championship and the top two tiers of the National League remain suspended with the potential to resume if conditions allow.

The FA statement said: “Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, The FA has been working collaboratively with the league within the National league System, the Women’s Football Board, the Women’s Football Conference, and the wider grassroots game to identify the most appropriate way to conclude the 2019/20 season at each level.

“The request to end the 2019/20 season was taken to The FA Council by the representatives of the relevant committees having been fully supported by The FA Board.

“The FA Council’s vote today was overwhelmingly in favour of ratifying the decision.”
