FA cast doubt over Liverpool's participation in Community Shield

There is some confusion as to whether Liverpool will partake in the Community Shield next month after the FA refused to confirm their participation.

The season curtain-raiser is set to take place at Wembley on August 29, and could see the return of a reduced number of supporters as English football trials getting spectators back into stadiums.

The match traditionally involves the Premier League title holders taking on the FA Cup winners, meaning in theory it should be Liverpool against the winner of Arsenal v Chelsea this Saturday.

But according to The Sun the FA have declared the competitors will be announced next week - and it is seemingly not 100% certain that the Reds will be involved.

A draft press release confirming the details of the fixture was changed to omit Liverpool's name, while Arsenal and Chelsea's were kept in.

It raises the possibility that Jurgen Klopp and his side have chosen against taking part, perhaps due to the fact they are unwilling to return from their shorter-than-usual break early.

Liverpool themselves have not shared details of the match with supporters, and there seems to be some uncertainty over their participation.

Klopp has defended the Community Shield in the past, questioning why it is not taken more seriously.

Speaking ahead of the event last season, when his side lost on penalties to Manchester City, the German said: "It's a final. This is the first time that I realised nobody sees it like that to be honest. A 'curtain-raiser' is unbelievable.

"We think constantly about the game and how we can prepare for it and then everyone thinks, 'Oh, do they really play?'

"That's not too cool, but it's how it is. I don't know exactly why people play this competition if it means nothing. Why don't we cancel it then?"
