The Football Association is to open an investigation into last night's touchline fight between Roberto Mancini and David Moyes, the managers of Manchester City and Everton, which resulted in both men being sent to the stands.
The incident has been compared to a confrontation between the Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, and Alan Pardew, then at West Ham, in 2006. On that occasion both were charged with improper conduct, and Wenger was fined £10,000. However, though the fourth official intervened in that incident the referee did not become involved.
The fact that both managers were shown the red card by Peter Walton means the FA is obliged to wait for the referee's report before deciding what action they should take.
