Juan Manuel Correa is in a stable condition after undergoing surgery on fractures to both of his legs, following the Formula Two crash in the Belgian Grand Prix F2 feature race that killed fellow driver Anthoine Hubert.
Sauber Junior Team driver Correa was attempting to avoid the spinning Giuliano Alesi as he came through Eau Rouge when he ran onto the Radillon run-off area and T-boned Hubert, who had already suffered an accident of his own.
The collision caused Correa’s car to go airborne, with the front portion of the Sauber ripped off and exposing his feet, leaving him trapped in the cockpit as he came to a rest upside down.
Correa was transferred to CHI Liege Hospital by helicopter where he underwent surgery on fractures suffered to both legs. He also suffered a minor spinal injury, but remained conscious throughout the accident.
A statement issued by Correa’s management team Race Tech Development Group said: “Today, American Juan Manuel Correa was involved in a scary incident at the Belgium Grand Prix at the Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
"A victim of an accident that happened in front of him, Correa had no place to go and made contact with a fellow competitor’s stopped FIA Formula 2 car. Suffering fractures to both of his legs and a minor spinal injury, Correa underwent surgery and is resting in Intensive Care.
“At the current moment, Juan Manuel Correa’s condition is stable. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital where he underwent surgery. Juan Manuel remained conscious the entire time until his admission to the operating room.
“While you keep Juan Manuel in your thoughts and prayers, please also pray for the well-being of Anthoine Hubert’s friends and family. In motorsports, we are a family, and we lost one of our family members today.
“More updates on Juan Manuel’s condition will be made public when available.”
The FIA has confirmed that Sunday’s planned F2 sprint race has been cancelled following Saturday’s events, with the Formula Three race rescheduled to 11am CET (10am BST) and the F1 Belgian Grand Prix remaining a 3:10pm CET (2:10pm BST) start time.
