F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix racetrack layout, tickets and what it means for other circuits

Formula 1 has added a third American race to its annual roster, following the decision to introduce the Las Vega Grand Prix for an upcoming season.

Another American Grand Prix, set to take place in Miami, is due to have its debut race this year.

Stefano Domenicali, the F1 president, said: "This is an incredible moment for F1 that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the US.

"Las Vegas is a destination known around the world for its excitement, hospitality, thrills, and of course, the famous Strip.

"There is no better place for Formula 1 to race than in the global entertainment capital of the world and we cannot wait to be here next year."

The deal for the track is a three-year contract, after years of attempting to get a race on the famous Vegas strip.

The Miami Grand Prix is expected to be a sellout, reflecting an appetite in America for an additional race, the third after the original in Texas.

Popularity in the sport is thought to be on the rise. In the 2021 Austin GP, weekend attendance is thought to have reached 400,000, with 140,000 present for Sunday’s race.

Interest in the sport in the US is thought to have been raised significantly by the wildly popular Netflix series, Drive To Survive, which has captivated audiences around the world that wouldn’t necessarily have called themselves F1 fans.

What will the track look like?

The track will be 3.8 miles long and will have 14 turns.

The route is expected to go past some of the city’s famous sights, including casinos and hotels like Caesars Palace, the Bellagio and the Venetian, for 50 laps.

The new track is also expected to be seriously fast - F1’s official site claims that the new track will have a comparable average speed to Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza at 212 mph.

It will include three main straights, including a single long main, as well as a high-speed cornering section and a chicane.

When is the first Las Vegas Grand Prix?

The inaugural Las Vega Grand Prix will take place in November of the 2023 season, meaning fans will have a little while to wait until they are able to watch this intriguing spectacle.

Slightly unusually, the race is expected to take place on a Saturday night, meaning that in the UK the race will be viewable in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Although the Las Vegas GP feels rather new, it has taken place in the past.

The city played host to two Grand Prix in the 1980s, but rather than take place in the Strip they were held in the car park of the Caesars Palace hotel.

Will another Grand Prix make way for Las Vegas?

At the time of writing, it isn't thought that the Las Vegas GP will be added at the expense of any other races.

This is because the Concord Agreement, which is in place until 2025, currently allows for 24 races to take place in a single year.

The 2022 season is expected to have a record 23 races, but this means there is still space for one more circuit.

Are other places in contention for a new F1 track?

Speaking to Sky Sports, Domenicali said: "On top of America, on top of China, I think there is a potential also to be in Africa soon.

"There is a lot of interest there. For sure that's another area that so far is missing in the geography of our calendar."
