Verstappen’s initial thoughts on his win:
“A great day for us. Lap one was a bit unlucky but after that we were flying. The car was really enjoyable, I could manage the pace and we pitted at the right time. Just fantastic execution by everyone.
“Step by step, race by race but this was for us an unbelievable weekend.”
A few flash quotes from Norris on the pit problem near the end of the race: “No idea [what happened with the pit stop] but I guess every now and then we make mistakes as a team, and today was one of them.
“I did everything I could today, I couldn’t do a lot more. I tried to fight with Max but he came out on top and deserved it.”
Was the a few jeers for Norris from the Italian fans as they came out on to the podium? What’s that about? It’s quite the scene on the track with the tifosi unveiling a some big Ferrari banners and letting off red flares. No driver on the podium for them today, but Leclerc impressed and Hamilton made it up from tenth to sixth.

Verstappen’s win is the fastest in history. It felt like it, manic trying to keep across everything there.

Verstappen wins the Italian Grand Prix!
After the first couple of laps that was never in doubt. A great drive and it looks like Red Bull has a car that could threaten for the remainder of the season. A second win of 2025 in Italy for Verstappen after taking the chequered flag at Imola too.

Lap 53/53: Kimi Antonelli is going to get a five-second penalty. That could be costly, he has made it up to eighth but will now drop out of the points.
Lap 52/53: Verstappen now has the fastest lap again.
Lap 51/53: Verstappen laughs over the radio when he’s informed of the McLaren issues behind him. Norris is out setting fastest laps and has escaped the clutches of Piastri’s DRS.
Lap 50/53: Ocon finally pits and will serve his five second penalty.
Lap 49/53: Verstappen is told to push through to the finish and the McLaren are now battling each other. The Red Bull has been imperious so far.
Lap 48/53: McLaren will make their drivers swap. Piastri makes his case but does hand over second place to Norris. They will now race for the extra points to the chequered flag.
Lap 47/53: As it is Verstappen leads the race again and has a huge gap to McLarens.
Lap 46/53: Bad news for Norris. That changeover is a lot slower than his teammate’s and he will come out behind Piastri. Piastri is going quick, will the McLarens ask them to swap?
Lap 45/53: Piastri is going to pit first and then Norris. Norris is concerned about being undercut.
Lap 44/53: Antonelli is being investigated for an incident with Albon. Albon was forced into the grass but did get through.
Lap 43/53: When will the McLaren’s pit and will it have any impact in the battle with Verstappen?
Lap 42/53: Piastri has been cutting into Norris’s lead, it’s down to 3.5secs.
Lap 41/53: We have a spin! Battling out in the lower places, Sainz and Bearman come off the track. The Haas driver appears to clip the Williams but after a brief yellow flag we’re back underway. Martin Brundle says it’s a racing incident but the stewards will have a look.
Lap 40/53: Antonelli has been back forth in this race. He passes Gasly and is now back in the points.
Lap 39/53: Hamilton pits and comes out in ninth.
Lap 38/53: Norris leads the race but has not pitted. He’s got more than 12 seconds on Verstappen in third but that is coming down quickly as the Red Bull sets a new fastest lap.
Lap 37/53: Red Bull get a fast change done and he’s back out in third, behind Piastri and Norris. Do the McLarens still think they can hold on with these treads?
Lap 36/53: Verstappen looks like he’s going to be coming in.
Lap 35/53: Leclerc has set the fastest lap time on the hard tyres. Russell has picked off a few of the roadblocks in his way. He’s up from tenth to seventh.
Lap 34/53: Leclerc must have got his speed down in time. No issues and he rejoins in sixth, behind Hamilton and Albon.
Lap 33/53: Leclerc has been called into the pits and he looks like he came in a little hot there. Will the stewards take a look?
Lap 32/53: Russell is going quick but has a bit of train in front of him to fight through.
Lap 31/53: Norris has found a bit of place, Verstappen’s gap is coming down. It’s just over five seconds having been over six ten laps ago.
Lap 30/53: Verstappen is going long on his tyres. It looks like all the drivers in the podium places now have the oldest sets on the track.
Lap 29/53: Isack Hadjar, who is yet to pit, has worked his way from the back of the grid into the points – for now.
Lap 28/53: Russell has pitted and comes out in 10th. Not the quickest stop but the new tyres are already working. The Mercedes sets a new fastest lalp.
Lap 27/53: Interesting from the McLaren team as they ask their drivers if they can stay out on these tyres for a little longer. A change in strategy?
Lap 26/53: Russell will have to pit soon you think as he continues to slip toward Hamilton, who is sixth.
Fernando Alonso retires
Lap 25/53: Uh oh! Fernando Alonso is trundling, what’s the problem? A suspension issue apparently. He’s done nothing wrong and that is very unfortunate.

Lap 24/53: A reminder that Ocon, who is currently tenth, still has to serve a five second penalty when he next pits.
Lap 23/53: Piastri is putting in some decent sectors on third but the top four is looking pretty settled.
Lap 22/53: Antonelli is now up to seventh but his teammate Russell could well be feeling the heat of Hamilton on his neck very soon.
Lap 21/53: Verstappen’s is still pulling away at the front.
Lap 20/53: There’s a kerfuffle in the Red Bull garage as Tsunoda comes in to for a change of tyres. It’s not a quick change and the Japanese driver is now behind Bearman.
Lap 19/53: The cars outside the points are all stating to pit. Bearman comes in.
Lap 18/53: Antonelli has recovered from his poor start to make up a few places. He’s back up to ninth.
Lap 17/53: Leclerc and his engineer seem pretty happy with how things are going. Piastri is hovering ahead of him by a couple of seconds.
Lap 16/53: As you were.
Lap 15/53: Russell is no longer in the DRS zone behind Leclerc and could soon be coming into the view of Hamilton in sixth.
Lap 14/53: Verstappen has more than four seconds lead ahead of Norris. Unless something dramatic happens this could be all sewn up for the Red Bull driver.
Lap 13/53: Lawson is called into the pits to swap his soft tyres for the hard compound and is at the back of the race again.
Lap 12/53: It was a powertrain issue for Hulkenburg that didn’t become fully apparent until the formation lap. Very unfortunate for the Sauber man.
Lap 11/53: Liam Lawson started 18th but has gained a few places and has made it up to 15th.
Lap 10/53: Verstappen sets another fastest lap, the gap to Norris is growing.

Lap 9/53: A battle to keep an eye on is George Russell in fifth working on Leclerc ahead of him. The gap is in the DRS zone, no opportunities to pass yet.
Lap 8/53: In answer to my question on lap six, Norris is not. Verstappen already has a couple of seconds on the McLaren, with Piastri also now getting away from Leclerc.
Lap 7/53: Esteban Ocon is going to have to serve a time penalty when he next heads into the pits. He forced Lance Stroll on to the grass, failing to leave enough of a gap for the Aston Martin

Lap 3/53: Verstappen is back at the front! With DRS activated he gets the run on Norris and having had to surrender his lead for the incident on the first corner makes the pass stick.

Lap 2/53 Leclerc is looking in inspired form. He gets back at Piastri and passes him. Verstappen giving up the lead caused a bit of a concertina behind hm allowing Leclerc to make his move on the McLaren.

First corner
It’s tight and Norris is unhappy with Verstappen, calling him an “idiot” over race radio after that testy run up to the first corner. Verstappen forces Norris into the grass and runs wide himself. He has to give up his first place to Norris so we already have a new leader. Behind the front two Leclerc passed Piastri but couldn’t hold on to third. Antonelli got off poorly and dropped from sixth to 10th.

Nico Hulkenberg has been called in by the Sauber garage and he’s out of the race. More on that when I get it.
The stands are packed with a sea of red at Monza and very much on top of the drivers in the home straight, this should be fun. It looks like a lively day for racing and formation lap is underway.
The pageantry of Monza is underway. Vittorio Grigola is doing a rousing rendition of the Italian national anthem with a marching band. This always reminds me crying rugby players or full-backs for the Azzurri. The cameras pan to Kimi Antonelli but he seems to have avoided the waterworks.

Colton Herta leaving IndyCar for the test driver role at Cadillac next year is the big news in my area of expertise. What do F1 fans think of him coming over, given he’s not the most successful IndyCar driver of the last few years?
For the sport, it would intriguing to see the impact an American driver in an American team, but rather than take this on myself I’ll let you guys answer this.

Lewis Hamilton looks much happier than before the mid-season break and the nadir of Hungary. While he may not be the most comfortable yet in his Ferrari, he is clearly loving being a driver for the team especially in Italy. Nico Rosberg, a former teammate at Mercedes, is yet to an improvement in Hamilton’s form and pointed to his crash at Zandvoort as evidence of a driver not completely in tune with his vehicle, but looking at the Briton filming the tifosi from the presentation lap he soaking it all in. “It’s only your first time once,” he tells Sky on the coverage.

Preamble
Last week at Zandvoort was Max Verstappen’s home race but with his last win this season coming at Imola and now having set the fastest-ever lap in Formula One history at Monza it’s pretty clear that this Dutchman is pretty happy to live la dolce vita.
Verstappen seemed non-plussed about having achieved his record feat. He said: “Honestly, I didn’t even think about that when I crossed the line, but it’s nice. It didn’t feel too bad. The cars have been fun. They are pretty decent in the high speed [corners]. They’re quite quick in a straight line. Of course, the low speed [corners], that’s where we lose out compared to the previous generation. And yeah, on some tracks you can do these lap records now. Also, the new tarmac helps around here, kerbing. Like, the kerbs opened up a little bit.“
McLaren’s race this season is such that even Verstappen cannot be sure of converting his pole into a victory but he seemed optimistic after a qualifying P1 where he averaged 164.44mph to post a time of 1min 18.792secs.
Lando Norris had just what is now the second fastest lap ever at Monza when Verstappen came through to take pole and the British driver, who has developed a bad habit of failing to deliver in the key moments. Last week at Zandvoort he had been the fastest throughout qualifying only to fall behind teammate Oscar Piastri in the last session and then crash out in the race.
Piastri qualified third ahead of the two Ferraris, but Lewis Hamilton has been hit with a five-place grid penalty from the last race. Hamilton starts tenth with Mercedes’ George Russell, his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda making up the rest of the top ten.
