F1 Hungarian Grand Prix 2020 result: Lewis Hamilton storms to victory to take world championship lead

Lewis Hamilton produced a dominant display to win the Hungarian Grand Prix and take the lead in the world championship standings.

The 35-year-old set a new lap record in qualifying and carried that form into the race, leading from the very first corner and never looking troubled by Max Verstappen.

The Red Bull star did superbly to make up four places on the first lap having crashed into the barriers on the way to the grid.

The Dutchman looked powerless to stop Valtteri Bottas taking second spot to complete a second consecutive one-two for Mercedes but held off the Finn with fresh tyres in the final laps to hold onto second.

Lance Stroll came home in a respectable fourth for the impressive Racing Point ahead of Alex Albon, with Sebastian Vettel, who was lapped by Hamilton, in sixth.

The rain threatened to derail Hamilton's comfortable lead out in front but the weather forecasts proved to be incorrect as teams pitted for slick tyres.

Kevin Magnussen enjoyed a fine race for Haas after the American team got their strategy spot on, choosing the medium compound tyre while every other team put on intermediates.

Despite a superb qualifying for Williams, George Russell and Nicholas Latifi finished 17th and 18th respectively, with the Canadian finishing three laps behind Hamilton.
