F1 fans backing Co Fermanagh woman to be big hit on Sky Sports coverage

Co Fermanagh woman Bernie Collins has joined Sky Sports' Formula One team for the new season.

Collins, who hails from Maguiresbridge, is a former performance engineer at McLaren and head of race strategy at Aston Martin.

She is taking on a role both on and off-screen, and will help Sky viewers understand everything related to team strategy and engineering.

Collins will join Martin Brundle, Nico Rosberg and Damon Hill at this weekend's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, and will also feature at a number of other races throughout the calendar.

Sky Sports announced the news ahead of Friday's first practice session in Saudi Arabia, and fans have welcomed the appointment.

One viewer said on Twitter: "Good to see you make a sensible addition to the team rather than another driver. Just need a dedicated technical expert."

Another added: "Very impressed, clearly knows what she is talking about and adds an interesting angle on strategy and performance."

James tweeted: "Brilliant addition to the broadcast team, very knowledgable. Nice work @SkySportsF1 and welcome to Bernie."

Another fan said: "Very very good addition to the ss f1 team she is!"

Collins said she can't wait to get started in her new role with Sky Sports F1.

She added: "I am really excited to begin this new chapter with the Sky Sports F1 team and want to thank them for the opportunity.

"After many years on the pit wall I'm keen to embrace this new role within F1 from a viewer's perspective and enhance their experience of racing.

Sky Sports Director of F1 Billy McGinty added: "I'm really looking forward to working with Bernie who will add a new dimension and untapped insight to our programming.

"We hope our viewers will learn a lot from Bernie on what goes on in the garage and on the pit wall at a race weekend."
