F1 news live: Red Bull and Max Verstappen protest George Russell’s win in Canadian GP

Lando Norris crashed out of the Canadian Grand Prix following a sensational 200mph collision with McLaren team-mate and championship rival Oscar Piastri.

As George Russell delivered a faultless drive to win from pole position ahead of Red Bull rival Max Verstappen, Norris banged into the back of Piastri as they duelled for fourth place with three laps to go.

Norris attempted to pass Piastri across the start-finish line but he misjudged the move and hit his team-mate's car.

Norris was forced to park his damaged McLaren and immediately accepted blame for the incident. "It is all my bad," he said on the radio "All my fault. Unlucky. Stupid from me."

What do FIA regulations say?

00:05 , Kieran Jackson

“In order to avoid the likelihood of accidents before the safety car returns to the pits, from the point at which the lights on the car are turned out, drivers must proceed at a pace which involves no erratic acceleration or braking, nor any manoeuvre which is likely to endanger other drivers or impede the restart.”

Russell and Verstappen are out the stewards room...

Christian Horner:

23:35 , Kieran Jackson

"Two protests that we've put to the stewards, that we've asked them to have a look at. Firstly, relating to the erratic driving behind the safety car, where George very heavily braked, obviously looking in his mirror for Max."

"The second one is very clearly the distance that was left behind the safety car that was well in excess - I think at least three times in excess - of the permitted distance.

“So it's within our right to obviously protest that. So we've lodged the protest."

Horner confirms protest is over Russell's driving behind safety car:

Horner confirms the protest is over Russell’s ‘erratic driving’ behind the safety car in front of Max Verstappen and also for not leaving the right gap behind it.

Red Bull protest

First thought is that it may be to do with Russell’s driving behind the safety car at the end of the race.

Verstappen overtook Russell late on, with the Dutchman saying Russell was braking too much.

Something to do with that? Otherwise, I’m at a loss.

Lewis Hamilton, after finishing P6:

22:13

“It was feeling decent up until then. Good start, held position, I was feeling optimistic and then I didn’t see it happen, hit a groundhog. That’s devastating, so horrible! Never happened to me here, but the floor has a hole in it.

“Given that, had a brake issue, we stayed out too long in the first stop. One thing to another, greatful I could just finish and bag those points, we’re in need of an upgrade, a lot of things to change for us.

“Don’t talk about it much! I don’t know if it’s much, don’t think it’ll be a lot. Just one of those years.”

Lando Norris, after retiring from the race:

21:42 , Kieran Jackson

“Pretty much. No one to blame but myself, sorry to the team and Oscar for going for something a bit too silly, at least it didn’t ruin his race.

“This was more silly. It wasn’t even ‘that’s racing’, just silly from my part. I go to bed tonight, apologise to everyone and then crack on.”
