Zayn Malik has slammed the Grammys days before the 2021 ceremony.
The singer and songwriter tweeted on Tuesday: “F*** the Grammys and everyone associated. Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary.”
Nominations for the 2021 Grammys were announced in November last year. It wasn’t immediately clear which specific event prompted Malik’s tweet.
The Independent has contacted the Recording Academy, the organisation that oversees the Grammys, for comment.
The 2021 Grammys will take place on Sunday (14 March). The ceremony, hosted by Trevor Noah, will air on CBS at 8pm ET/5pm PT/1am GMT.
Malik has never been personally been nominated for a Grammy, although the song “I Don't Wanna Live Forever”, which he recorded with Taylor Swift for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media during the 2018 ceremony.
His most recent solo album, Nobody Is Listening, was released in January 2021.
According to the Recording Academy’s website, the Grammy Awards are “voted on by the Recording Academy's voting membership, which is comprised of music creators, including artists, producers, songwriters, and engineers”.
More specifically, contenders submit their recordings for consideration, after which “reviewing sessions by more than 350 experts in various fields are held to ensure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been placed in appropriate fields”.
First-round ballots are sent out, and – after a review by special committees if necessary – nominations are announced. Winners are picked via a final round of ballots.
