"F**king hippy w*****s" - furious Edinburgh drivers vent about yesterday's North Bridge protest

Yesterday, Extinction Rebellion climate activists blocked off North Bridge in Edinburgh - one of the busiest roads in the city centre - during rush hour as part of a coordinated series of protests across the UK.

A lot of locals voiced their support for the protesters, however, there were also a lot of very angry motorists and commuters who were a little bit less supportive, to put it mildly.

Many people took to Twitter to voice their anger at the protest (which we live-blogged) replying to tweets about diversions with expletive-filled rants about 'unwashed, jobless snowflakes'.

Extinction Rebellion: Footage shows police 'dragging' climate activists off Princes Street

One motorist was heard screaming "F**king hippy w*****s" at the crowd as he drove past on Princes Street along the diverted route towards Waterloo Place. Others took to Twitter to complain (some more swearily than others).

Many complained about the fact the diversions meant they had to drive further - leading to more emissions:

And a Twitter user called GrumpyEdinMan (appropriately) complained about added pollution as well:

Some people proposed more extreme measures to reopen the bridge:

And quite a lot of people commented on the fact that the activists were seen driving to the protest and parking on nearby streets:

What do you think: were the Extinction Rebellion activists right to close the bridge - in their words, to prevent Edinburgh residents carrying out 'business as usual', forcing them to confront the threat of climate change, are you unspeakably furious about your delayed commute, or are you on the fence? Have your say in our poll below:
