Ezgjan Alioski branded a "liability" after his display against Chelsea

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan claims they need a proper left-back because Ezgjan Alioski is “a liability”.

Alioski has shared left-back duties with Stuart Dallas this season, although it is not their natural position.

Whelan was unimpressed by Alioski’s performance there against Chelsea and felt his flank was wide open to Blues’ attacks.

He feels Marcelo Bielsa and director of football Victor Orta need to sign a specialist left-back this summer to plug that hole in the Leeds defence.

Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds in his role as matchday summariser: “Leeds need a natural full-back there that you know can cover most bases, definitely defensively because as much as he gives everything, he is a liability. He’s not the best of defenders.

“I think that’s why you could see a lot going down that left-hand side, really targetting Alioski and you saw that frailty there at times.”

Orta is already working on signing a left-back at the end of the season and Crystal Palace ’s Patrick van Aanholt and Stade Brest’s Romain Perraud are two names on his list of targets.

Van Aanholt, 30, is out of contract at Selhurst Park and the Dutchman is a proven Premier League performer.

Perraud, 23, is at the other end of the scale and the Frenchman has received rave reviews for his display for Brest in Ligue 1.

Alioski, 29, is out of contract this summer and Bielsa claims it is up to him to decide if his future remains at Elland Road.

Bielsa still sees Alioski as an important squad member, even if Leeds do sign a specialist left-back, and feels the North Macedonia’s best position is in midfield.
