Award-winning French architect Jean Nouvel is not worried about being in the red – he’s made it an artistic statement. His structure for this year’s Serpentine pavilion, a temporary annual installation in Kensington gardens, London, that has become one of the highlights of the arts year, is a giant red symbol of the recession. The temporary pavilion was built not only with money from private sponsors, but also, on this occasion, with some Arts Council money. • This article was amended on 9 July 2010.
