Eyewitness: Dresden, 1952

A view along Münzgasse Strasse, Dresden, 1952
People remove debris from Münzgasse Strasse in front of the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady). It was destroyed in February 1945 when allied planes dropped 650,000 bombs, creating a firestorm that killed 25,000 people. Reconsecrated in 2005 after more than a decade and €180m (£150m) of reconstruction work, the church has become a symbol of conciliation Illustration: Slub Dresden/AFP
