As I look back upon my time as the United Kingdom's Ambassador to Thailand, I do so with deep gratitude for five remarkable years in a country that has offered partnership, friendship and inspiration in equal measure. It has been an enormous privilege to represent the UK here and to witness first-hand the strength and warmth that underpin the relationship between our two nations.
I arrived at a moment of global uncertainty. Thailand, like all countries, was navigating the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the years since, I have seen a powerful story of resilience and recovery -- from communities and businesses adapting with determination, to the country reopening and reconnecting with the world. Thailand's economic dynamism, openness to innovation, and central role within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) have only become more evident over time.
Throughout this period, the UK–Thailand partnership has continued to deepen and diversify. Trade and investment remain at its core, with strong collaboration across financial services, advanced manufacturing, the creative economy and digital innovation. The UK–Thailand Enhanced Trade Partnership, signed in 2024, has created a solid platform for growth.
Equally important are the connections between our people. Over a million British visitors continue to be drawn to Thailand's culture and hospitality each year, while Thai students, professionals and tourists contribute richly to life in the UK. Education partnerships, including Chevening scholarships, continue to strengthen these links for generations and advance both countries' development priorities. I have been glad to meet hundreds of UK alumni during my time as ambassador.
Our cooperation also extends to assisting British nationals. Outreach in key destinations has been a priority, working closely with Thai authorities, including the Tourist Police. These partnerships reflect the trust and shared purpose that define our relationship.
Looking ahead, I am confident that the UK–Thailand partnership is well placed for an even stronger future.
There is clear potential to deepen our economic ties further, particularly in sectors that will shape tomorrow's economies. Green growth, digital technology and high-value services offer significant opportunities for collaboration. As Thailand continues its economic transformation, and the UK strengthens its engagement in the Indo-Pacific, the scope for partnership will only expand.
Climate goals will be central to this next chapter. Both of our countries are committed to addressing climate change and advancing towards net zero. From renewable energy and green finance to biodiversity, industrial decarbonisation and carbon capture, there is enormous potential to work together and deliver shared impact.
Science and innovation will also play a defining role. By strengthening collaboration in research, technology and skills, we can equip our societies to be prepared for the rapidly advancing technologies such as AI, and for the challenges and opportunities ahead. The UK's global strengths in science and innovation, combined with Thailand's ambition and regional connectivity, provide a powerful foundation.
Looking ahead, the UK and Thailand are well placed to deepen an already strong political and security partnership, grounded in our shared interest in regional stability and an open, rules-based international system. There is clear scope to expand cooperation on security in areas such as maritime, cyber and the wider transnational challenges that increasingly share our global environment. As Thailand continues to play a central role within Asean, and as the UK strengthens its engagement in the Indo-Pacific, I am confident that this collaboration will grow in both importance and impact.
At the highest level, the close ties between our Royal Families continue to hold special significance. Later this month, Thailand will welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne. Her visit will further underline the continuity and strength of our long-standing friendship, and the importance both countries place on these enduring bonds.
As I prepare to leave Thailand, I do so with a profound sense of appreciation. I am grateful to our Thai partners across government, business and society for their friendship and collaboration. I leave with lasting personal memories of a country that has been both welcoming and inspiring.
The partnership between the United Kingdom and Thailand has stood the test of time, and I am certain it will continue to flourish.
