Eye-catching Easter display in New Galloway to remain on public view until the end of April 2021

An eye-catching Easter window display in New Galloway is to remain on public view until the end of the month because it is proving so popular.

And anyone thinking the Easter egg exhibition in the community shop has an Eastern European flavour would be right – the designer is from Croatia.

Kristina Gerrard, originally from Zagreb, has only been in New Galloway for a year after moving north from Manchester.

A former registrar in Bolton, the 70-year-old designed window displays for an up-market cosmetic company as a sideline while living in the city.

After she moved to the Glenkens, Kristina’s talents were noticed and she created a Christmas display for the community shop.

“I got a nice letter of thanks saying how much people enjoyed it,” said Kristina.

“I did Valentine’s and Mothers’ Day exhibitions too.

“Then I just thought how wonderful it would be, with lockdown still on, if we could get together and do something for Easter.

“So I got everybody involved to decorate the eggs – and I did the window.”

Kristina added: “I would not have been able to make the display without the goodwill and all the talented people in this village. It really is a community collaboration and I did my very best to show off the talents of all those who contributed.”

The display is also acting as a showcase for a craft group being established as a focal point for local makers.

“We got a grant and were getting all set up when lockdown came,” Kristina said.

“We have ten or 12 names already and as soon as we are allowed to mix together we will meet in the town hall.

“I’d like to give a special mention to Jeannie, who knitted Easter rabbits and chicks for sale in the shop to raise funds.”

Meanwhile, even in the short time she has been here Kristina has been bowled over by the warmth of local people.

“It’s the nicest place I could have ever moved to,” she said.

“I used to come up with my ex-partner in the camper van and that’s how I got to know the area. We split up and I thought it’s not too late to make another move. I have never been happier.”

Keen gardener Kristina, whose maiden name is Stazic, is now on the lookout to buy a small plot to put her green fingers to good use.

“I’m good with flowers and I’d like to grow some vegetables as well,” she said.

Anyone who can help can contact the community shop.
