'Extremely harsh' - Manchester United legend makes Liverpool Premier League title declaration

Manchester United great Edwin van der Sar has said it would be "extremely harsh" if Liverpool are denied the Premier League title.

The Reds are a record 25 points clear at the summit and need only two more wins from their remaining nine games to secure a first title since 1990.

Elite football in England has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak, with the Premier League having been given the green light by the government to start planning for a return mid-June.

The Football Association has declared the season must be determined on sporting merit, with the top flight considering points-per-game to decide positions should the remaining 92 fixtures not be played.

And former United keeper van der Sar, who won the title four times at Old Trafford, believes nobody should have a problem if Liverpool are declared champions and Jurgen Klopp's side shouldn't have it snatched away from them.

"With the type of football they played and the points they are ahead, it would be extremely harsh," he said, speaking to CNN Sport.

"The Premier League are a well-run league and of course there are big interests on the financial side, the commercial sides.

"But I'm sure they will make a wise decision if they keep on playing or if the league stops, what the results will be depending for Champions League places, relegation or awarding a title to Liverpool.

"If the league doesn't resume, I presume everybody will be okay if Liverpool wins the title."
