Extraordinary Covid study finds just 32 Brits admitted to hospital after having vaccine

An extraordinary coronavirus study found that just 32 vaccinated Brits have been hospitalised out of more than 74,000 patients.

Scientists claim the findings show the effectiveness of Covid jabs and the impact of Britain's successful vaccination programme.

Researchers analysed the cases of 74,405 people admitted to hospital with the virus between September and March and found that only 32 had received a jab at least three weeks before.

University of Liverpool Professor Calum Semple, who is a member of SAGE, said he was "absolutely delighted" with the results.

He said they showed vaccines are "highly effective", proving "not only do they work, but they work extraordinarily well".

He added that the findings were even more remarkable because they related to those who had received just one jab.

Professor Semple said the results gave him confidence in Boris Johnson's lockdown exit plan.

Updated results and analysis will be handed to SAGE on Wednesday before being passed to ministers, the Daily Telegraph reports.

This detailed report will look into the 32 vaccinated Brits who were hospitalised and find out whether they had a milder form of the virus.

It comes after a trial found the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab offered 100% protection against severe cases of Covid.

The vaccines are said to be 90% effective at keeping those infected out of hospital after just one dose, according to findings reportedly relaid to the government.

The UK has forged ahead of European neighbours with its speedy vaccine rollout, with all adults set to have one dose by July 31.

The one-dose vaccination figures were calculated by comparing Covid hospitalisation rates in those who have received their first dose with those of a similar age who haven’t.

More than 33 million people have received their first dose of the vaccine across the UK, with a further 10.4 million second doses administered.
