Extra security to be installed after illegal traveller camps set up

Additional security measures could be put in place in a bid to prevent further illegal traveller encampments.

North Somerset Council is considering installing additional bollards at the entrance to Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, in Weston-super-Mare.

The move follows several illegal encampments in the past several weeks.

Each time the authority, which owns the land, has to carry out welfare checks before issuing the groups with a direction to leave.

If the travellers remain the council then has to apply to the magistrates court for a possession order for the land and to evict.

A group of five caravans parked up on the site on June 13 and remain on the land.

The council visited the site on June 14 to carry out welfare checks and issued the group with a notice to leave.

However the group refused to comply and the authority is now applying through the courts to remove the group and a hearing is due to take place on June 21.

North Somerset Council spokeswoman Zoe Briffitt said securing the land at Hutton Moor against encampments was proving difficult.

Mrs Briffitt said: “Access to the field has to be maintained so that the grounds maintenance crew can cut the grass and carry out line markings on the site.

“An access point is also required in case of an emergency so vehicles can attend the scene.

“We currently have one gate that is padlocked to prevent access to the fields and we are considering introducing two bollards behind the gate as an extra deterrent to prevent trespassing.”

The seaside town has seen several traveller encampments over the past two months.

Groups have illegally parked on fields at Locking Primary, on the Beach Lawns and on playing fields at Herons Moor Academy.

North Somerset is a popular stop off with travellers during the summer months when they arrive in the district looking for work.

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.
