Extra secondary undergraduate teacher training places available

Edge Hill University has been allocated a number of additional places on Secondary Education degree programmes, giving even more would-be teachers the opportunity to learn with the country's largest provider of initial teacher training.

The extra places are for three-year undergraduate degrees in English, design & technology, and religious education – three of Edge Hill's most popular and successful Secondary Education programmes – with courses beginning in September 2014.

Robert Smedley, Dean of the Faculty of Education at Edge Hill University, says: "Being awarded these places by the National College of Teaching and Learning (NCTL) shows how highly regarded Edge Hill is nationally. We have an excellent track record for providing high quality teacher education and for attracting large numbers of high calibre trainees.

Undergraduate teacher training degrees allow trainees to broaden their subject knowledge to degree level while developing themselves as outstanding teachers. Successful completion of the course leads to qualified teacher status (QTS) without the need for a further PGCE qualification.

"Many students choose to take a first degree followed by a yearlong PGCE, but there are many advantages to choosing the undergraduate route into teaching," explains Robert. "A three-year QTS degree gives students more opportunities to undertake placements in schools, as well as more time to get involved in co-curricular activities such as volunteering or research, which enhances their CVs. Students also gain QTS more quickly (in three years rather than four)."

"We want to let people know that these extra places have been made available for 2014 entry," says Robert. "These courses are very popular so we're delighted to be able to open up this opportunity to more people and play our part in the training of new teachers for our country's schools."
