Extra medics drafted in to help at covid-hit Paisley care home

Medics have been drafted in to treat vulnerable residents at a Paisley care home after more than half tested positive for Covid-19.

Two GPs and the clinical director of Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) supported staff at Braemount Care Home after 47 residents caught the virus and more showed symptoms of the deadly disease.

One resident has since died.

It is understood the HSCP has immediate concerns about staffing levels, care provided and infection prevention and control.

The doctors worked to complete clinical assessments of residents over the weekend.

A senior nursing team also remains on site to ensure the clinical and personal needs of the residents are being met.

The Express reported last week how there had been a Covid-19 outbreak across the home’s three units.

Councillor Eddie Devine - whose own mother was a resident of the Glenburn home before she passed away - has demanded answers as to how 55 per cent of the residents located across three buildings could contract Covid-19.

“I am shocked and appalled that this has happened,” he said.

“We are not naïve enough to think that we would not get covid cases in care homes, but the sheer number of people in that home that are infected is mind boggling.

“I want answers as to how this could happen considering I have been asking for months at Emergency Board meetings that everyone gets tested in these homes on a regular basis.

“I am not blaming anyone but we need to know how this has happened.”

Braemount Care Home has three distinct homes within its complex on Donaldswood Road.

Espadair and Linnwell houses provide nursing care and support, while Nethercraigs specialises in dementia care.

Bosses at Advinia Health, which owns the home, said covid had been identified in all these units as of last week.

Councillor Devine added: “Forty-seven residents means 47 families are getting this news.

“I know the place quite well and I can’t imagine what these people are going through with their mums and dads in there.”

A spokesman for Advinia Health said all staff had appropriate PPE and stated enhanced cleaning was being carried out.

He said: “We can confirm that one resident has passed away after testing positive for Covid-19.

“The sad news has been directly communicated to the resident’s family by the home and we publicly send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of this resident.

“Our dedicated teams are working tirelessly to provide care to our residents at this challenging time and we are sourcing staff from our nearby care homes to lend support to the core team, as well as receiving nursing support from our local HSCP, for which we are very grateful.”

“We remain grateful to our colleagues and partners in the local HSCP, Health Protection Scotland and the Care Inspectorate for their support at this time.”

A spokesman for Renfrewshire HSCP said it was in daily contact with the home and that it “continues to work in partnership with the Care Inspectorate to ensure that residents are cared for and protected”.

“We are in daily contact with the home and will continue to keep in close contact with the provider to offer ongoing advice, support and assurance to them.”
