Extra day off school in 2018 because of bus shortage

Term two will start on Tuesday, April 17 next year to accommodate the Commonwealth Games.

Queensland's school children will get an extra day of holidays next year, to manage a looming bus shortage during the Commonwealth Games.

The Minister for Education and the Commonwealth Games, Kate Jones, said buses used during the closing ceremony would not have enough time to return to regional areas for the start of the second term.

Term two will now start on Tuesday April 17, instead of the Monday.

As many as 700 buses will be needed throughout the 11-day event, every ticket includes free public transport.

Furthermore, the buses will be used to transport event staff, athletes and media representatives.

Ms Jones said the decision was made after discussions with principals, P&Cs Queensland and the relevant unions, however the Opposition is not happy.

The LNP said school children will not only miss out on a day of learning, but their parents will either have to take leave or be faced with additional childcare costs.

"School kids are going to miss out because Labor's bungled the Commonwealth Games," Opposition transport spokesman Andrew Powell said.

"Kate Jones cobbled together a Commonwealth Games Transport Plan — a year late — which ignored these issues."
