Extra cash sought for damages fund

The Department of Rights and Liberties Protection will seek an additional budget of 210 million baht to fill a depleting fund set up to compensate victims in criminal cases.

Pitikan Sithidej, the department's director-general, said it received 300 million baht from the government to spend on damages in the current fiscal year ending in September.

However, the department disbursed all of that by paying 5,642 victims and defendants from last October to this month, she said.

Ms Pitikan said the department is accelerating its plan to ask the cabinet to allocate the fresh funds.

She said the department will be able to disburse money to compensate people in criminal cases when it is granted the additional sum.
