Extra bus services on Canberra roads this weekend

Almost 700 extra bus services will be on the road from Saturday, as major changes to Canberra's public transport network get under way.

New routes have been included in the changes and local buses will run every 30 minutes.

Rapid bus services will also be direct and more regular.

From Monday, commuters will also be able to check the quietest travel times on rapid routes to avoid overcrowding as coronavirus remains a threat in the ACT.

Transport Minister Chris Steel said more services would be available in off-peak times in a bid to reduce crowding.

The ACT government has not implemented restrictions on public transport throughout the pandemic, but urged commuters to travel during off-peak times.

Mr Steel said the rollout was timed with the easing of restrictions in the ACT.

Public transport use has dropped to 50 per cent what it was this time last year.

"I encourage Canberrans to start planning their journey using Transport Canberra's online tool because timings, routes and connections have changed across the updated network," Mr Steel said.

The new timetable includes services to Belconnen town centre from Crace, Palmerston and Nicholls to reduce changes for Gungahlin residents.

There will also be a new service through Giralang, Kaleen and McKellar connecting Gungahlin and Belconnnen.

"Residents of Tuggeranong will have access to more peak buses each afternoon from the city and Barton to Lanyon, Kambah, Chisholm and Calwell, and more Rapid 5 services (Lanyon to city), running every 10 minutes all day during the week," Mr Steel said.

"We have also improved local services in the region with routes 72, 76 and 77, providing direct buses through to the Canberra Hospital and Woden."
