Extra bank holiday could be on the cards if England win Euro 2020

After England beat Denmark 2-1 in extra time last night, the government is now considering an extra day off if the team win the Euros, it has been reported.

The squad have now made it to the finals and will compete against Italy on Sunday to win the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.

Gareth Southgate's men now have the chance to win England's first major tournament since the World Cup in 1966.

With the match kicking off at 8pm, the government confirmed earlier this week that licensing laws will be relaxed to allow pubs to stay open until 11.15pm in case the game goes to extra-time and penalties, the MEN reports.

Now senior officials are weighing up whether the country could be granted an extra bank holiday if the team wins.

According to POLITICO, ministers were discussing late last night how a potential victory could be celebrated.

Some think a national holiday on Monday is the best idea when there is little prospect of any work getting done anyway.

Given how last-minute the change would be however, that will present logistical challenges.

Either way, government officials think there should be a 'national day of celebration' if Harry Kane and co lift the trophy, POLITICO reports.

There is also speculation as to whether manager Gareth Southgate and players such as Raheem Sterling are in line for knighthoods, regardless of the result.

Sterling, 26, is already and MBE and has been England's standout player of the tournament.
