Extra £59m for Wales in arts and culture sector fund - but Welsh Government wants to see 'small print'

UK Government says Wales will receive an additional £59 million as a result of the £1.57 billion UK Government funding allocated to support arts, culture and heritage industries in England.

The UK Government made the announcement on Sunday evening with calls for Welsh Government to ensure it all goes on these sectors.

But First Minister Mark Drakeford said they would wait until the summer statement by Chancellor Rishi Sunak on Wednesday to ensure the money is new funding rather than recycled from other budgets.

He said it was important to see the "small print" and that they were actually receiving £59m in new funding before making a commitment - but said they were determined to support the arts in Wales.

He said the Welsh Government cabinet would meet to then see what additional money was available.

Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart said: “The Welsh Government has said that it doesn’t have the firepower to support the arts in Wales, so the UK Government is providing £59 million so that they can do just that.

“Many arts, culture and heritage organisations across the UK are facing hardship as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and those in Wales are no exception.

“We have no time to lose in getting this money to the front line and I’ll be pushing the Welsh Government to ensure that happens."

UK Government said that as well as providing more than £2.3 billion extra funding for the devolved administration in Wales, they had set up a range of UK-wide measures that are available to support people and businesses in Wales.
