Extra 15,000 tickets to go on sale for Open Championship at Royal Portrush

An extra 15,000 tickets have been made available for this year's Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

The original sale saw golf fans snap up tickets in record time for the tournament that runs from 18-21 July.

But the huge demand has seen the R&A increase the capacity on each of the four Championship days by 3,750 people.

It means a staggering 215,000 spectators will gather at the Antrim venue as Northern Ireland stages the tournament for the first time since 1951.

The R&A's chief executive Martin Slumbers said: "From the moment tickets and hospitality packages went on sale last year it was clear that there was huge demand from fans to attend this historic occasion.

"We have been working closely with the government agencies, our advisers and contractors to assess whether we could accommodate some fans on each day of the Championship and have decided that we can do so without impacting on the outstanding spectator experience we provide."

The extra tickets for the Open Championship will go on sale on 15 April.
