Extra $14m for storm-hit Victorian farmers

Victorian farmers recovering from the wild storms and floods that hit the state six months ago can apply for $25,000 grants to help with repairs.

The storms in June resulted in the busiest period on record for the State Emergency Service, and left more than 100 homes uninhabitable.

The massive dump of rain in the state's east also caused extensive flooding in Gippsland, where farmers were left isolated and without electricity.

Six months on, the state and federal governments have announced $14.5 million through a joint-funded disaster recovery funding arrangement.

Most of that money will go to grants of up to $25,000 for farmers so they can remove fallen trees, repair farm infrastructure and fix landslips and erosion on their properties.

Local community recovery groups and traditional owners will also receive $1 million to help them organise support efforts.

The money announced on Saturday is in addition to $100 million in recovery funding from the Victorian government.

Victorian Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said the grants would be a welcome relief.

"Our Victorian farmers are extremely resilient and work hard each and every day - this support will help them manage the challenges created by the June storms and floods and fast-track their recovery," she said.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Bridget McKenzie said farmers would be able to focus on returning to their businesses.

"As communities across Victoria continue to face such adversities, all levels of government will persevere in providing them the support they need," she said in a statement.
