Extinction Rebellion warn 'targeted disruption' will erupt as they descend on Glasgow during COP26

Extinction Rebellion warn 'targeted disruption' will erupt as they descend on Glasgow during COP26.

The environmental campaigners are planning several protests throughout the city as world leaders gather throughout the first fortnight in November.

One activist known as Ruth D, said the aim is to 'build a groundswell' that the government 'just can't ignore'.

The gran-to-be told Radio Clyde: “We don't know what the outcome of COP26 is going to be but whatever the outcome, our plan is that we build a groundswell before, during and after COP26 that our government and other governments globally, just can't ignore.

"We will be doing targeted disruption, we consult with disadvantaged communities, to see how we can avoid disrupting their lives."

Ruth stressed that she sympathised with people who are 'fed up' with their protesting but said they have 'no other choice'.

“I can totally understand why people are fed up of this but we're heading for 3.5 degrees," she added.

"And by the end of the century, and that's disaster, that's runaway climate change that you cannot stop.”

We told how Police Scotland and other agencies are upping their security quota to deal with COP 26.

And earlier today we reported on Police Scotland launching a six week campaign to highlight a tactic which will be used to disrupt a range of criminal activity - including terrorism - and to reassure the public during Glasgow’s COP26.

Project Servator will involve highly visible and unpredictable deployments carried out by specially trained officers trained to identify people who may be planning or preparing to commit a crime.

These officers will be supported by police sniffer and explosive detection dogs, horses, armed officers, a dive unit and CCTV operators and security staff - and can also use Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology.

World leaders planning to visit Glasgow during COP26 include Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron and Pope Francis.
