Extinction Rebellion to target Hargreaves Lansdown in latest Bristol protest

Extinction Rebellion has announced plans to target a Bristol-based investment company as part of its next protest.

Actvists will gather outside Hargreaves Lansdown in Anchor Road tomorrow (January 21) from midday to raise awareness of the need for ethical investment.

A spokesperson for the Bristol branch of the movement said the action will involve "humorous street theatre" to draw attention to the ongoing climate crisis .

The group wants Hargreaves Lansdown and other financial investment companies to help encourage the government to commit to making the country 'zero carbon' by 2030.

The coordinator of tomorrow's action said: “Hargreaves Lansdown and other investment firms have a huge responsibility to ensure their clients are told the truth about their investments and that those placed with fossil fuel companies are likely to become ‘stranded assets’ as we make the transition towards getting our energy needs from renewable sources.”

A spokesperson for the group added: "The UK Parliament declared a climate emergency in May 2019 but it is failing to act on this declaration.

"We believe that Hargreaves Lansdown has the financial clout to influence our government to come up with a clear set of policy directives leading to a ‘zero carbon’ by 2030.

"Tuesday’s gathering outside Hargreaves Lansdown is made up of people who work in a wide range of professional sectors, including commercial, academic, building trade, medical, IT, publishing, educational to mention a few.
