Extinction Rebellion to launch 'three weeks of protests' and target Edinburgh

Climate change activists Extinction Rebellion Scotland say they will target cities - including Edinburgh - during three weeks of "synchronised creative protests”.

The non violent action will begin this week and and could see banners, protests, vigils and even street performances in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Stirling.

In the past, Extinction Rebellion have caused travel chaos in the capital after shutting down North Bridge in a rush hour protest which brought city centre traffic to a standstill.

In a statement, the group said the civil disobedience would be aimed at highlighting "the collusion between the finance sector, Scottish and UK Government, and the fossil fuel industry, in particular North Sea oil and gas”.

The protesters say the movements have been "designed with COVID-19 safety in mind" and will encourage the use of masks and social distancing.

Entitled "Make the Connections" the three week long movement will 'culminate on October 26, the day the Scottish Parliament reconvenes.'

Activist Sarah Krischer, 28, an archaeologist told the Daily Record: “Scotland must truly become climate leaders and pivot towards a greener future.

"However, this can only happen if we end this toxic collusion between the Scottish Government, big finance and the fossil fuel industry.”
