Extinction Rebellion Scotland activists smash Barclays bank windows in Glasgow

Extinction Rebellion Scotland activists have broken the windows at Barclays new offices in Glasgow to demand an end to the funding of the fossil fuel crisis. Two activists donned safety gloves and goggles to destroy the glass panes at the office block on Clyde Place Quay at around 8am on Monday.

The protest group say the demonstration is part of a UK-wide campaign to cause disruption to the bank, with other branches targeted across the country. Pictures from the scene show three campaigners holding up a banner that reads “Stop Funding Rosebank” while uniformed police watch on.

A second protest is planned for 1pm outside the Glasgow office, Extinction Rebellion have confirmed. They claim that Barclays are the ‘biggest funder of fossil fuels in Europe’ as well as backing the proposed Rosebank Oil Field which located off the coast of Shetland.

Alex Cochrane of Extinction Rebellion Scotland said: “Barclays are the biggest funders of fossil fuel in Europe. Their greed is exploiting and creating a future of famine, displaced people and global suffering.

“We all know we need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels. We all know the climate crisis is already hitting us yet Barclays still refuses to do the right thing for us. For all our sakes, they must stop using our money to fund fossil fuels."

Police Scotland have confirmed that two people have been arrested. A force spokesperson said: "Around 8.10am on Monday 14 November, 2022 police were made aware of damage to a property in Kingston Street, Glasgow. Officers attended and two men have been arrested. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Barclays have been contacted for comment.
