Extinction Rebellion protests: Police remove climate activists from occupied sites and order them to Marble Arch

Police have begun to remove climate protesters from occupied sites in London after ordering them to demonstrate in Marble Arch or not at all.

Scotland Yard imposed a condition on the Extinction Rebellion movement, ordering those involved to restrict their actions.

"In order to impose this condition, the Met required evidence that serious disruption was being caused to communities in London," a statement from the force said.

It said was deemed that restricting them to Marble Arch was "necessary in order to prevent the demonstrations from causing ongoing serious disruption to community".

Images showed some protesters being lifted away from Waterloo Bridge by Met Police officers.

The force was unable to confirm details of any arrests to the Standard.

This comes after the group said it intended to continue its action indefinitely until the Government meets their demands.

Protestors have been told to go to Marble Arch

Extinction Rebellion blocked roads and bridges across London on Monday on the first day of its “International Rebellion”.

“We are trying to stay as long as possible,” a spokeswoman for the group told the Standard.

“There are people who are willing to be arrested.”

People are being physically removed

Those prepared to be arrested for their cause have been given advice by the group on how to act should they be detained.

They also understand the potential of criminal charges being taken against them, according to the spokeswoman.

Three men and two women were arrested earlier on suspicion of criminal damage in Lambeth at the Shell HQ.

London Bridge, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus and Marble Arch are among the areas which have been filled with thousands of demonstrators.
