Extinction Rebellion London: Protest locations, road closures date and size of October demonstration

Thousands of climate change activists are causing chaos across London in a bid to force the Government to take action on the environmental crisis.

Nearly 600 people have been arrested so far as the planned two-week Extinction Rebellion protest entered its third day on Tuesday.

Activists have been pictured attaching themselves to buildings, holding protests and blocking roads across the capital to urge politicians to tackle the growing environmental crisis.

The environmental group plans to protest outside key Government departments for the next fortnight, alongside areas in central London including Westminster, Lambeth Bridge and City Airport.

With XR continuing to protest in London, here's everything you need to know about the demonstrations.

When will the Extinction Rebellion protests take place?

Demonstrations started on Monday, October 7 and will last for around 14 days.

Protestors began to gather at about 7am on Monday, three hours before the intended start time. Police have already begun to make arrests and have set up traffic diversions.

Activists were cut out of a car parked outside the Department of Defence, and human blockades were set up across the city.

As of Tuesday, nearly 600 people were arrested.

Where will the protests take place?

The groups says protests are taking place across the world, with coordinated protest being held in Australia and New Zealand already.

Areas of London that are expected to experience disruption include Lambeth Bridge and Westminster Bridge, with activists gathering at Westminster on Monday.

Roads outside of government department buildings, such as Downing Street, the Ministry of Defence, the Treasury, Embankment and the Houses of Parliament will also face disruption or be closed.

Police have tried to move protesters from Westminster, but demonstrators defied the warnings and glued themselves to the Department for Transport building and to the underside of a lorry outside the Home Office.

Police have set up up traffic diversions around the capital, and activists are travelling from across the country to take part in the protests.

Elsewhere in London expect to see Trafalgar Square, The Mall, Horse Guards Road, Horseferry Road and Millbank affected.

Marble Arch is being used a base for the next two weeks as other sites are moved between. Police are trying to move activists to Trafalgar Square.

Further disruption is expected throughout the week, with the protest group revealed plans to shut down London City Airport for up to three days on Thursday.

How big is the protest expected to be?

XR says the protest will be around five times bigger than demonstrations in April, which caused chaos in London and brought the capital to a standstill.

Up to 30,000 people have been rumoured to be taking part across the two weeks, with last night's opening ceremony attracting around 1,000.

The group says it is expecting several thousand people to target different government departments over the next fortnight.

Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Zoe Jones, 24, previously said it has had 4,000 people sign up and "say they are willing to be arrested".

Why are they protesting?

The planned disruption is intended to force the UK Government to take action on climate change and the environmental crisis, and to raise awareness of the situation.

Ms Jones added: "We're here to pressure the Government into action because we can't wait any longer."

Protesters say they want to "shut down Westminster" as part of a wider international rebellion in 60 cities across the world.

The group states on its website: "This isn’t a distant apocalypse. People all over the world are suffering and dying right now. Whole species are going extinct. And it will only get worse. The time to act is now.

"It’s already begun to happen to others. Next, it will happen to you, and everybody you love, too.

"Together, we will peacefully occupy the centres of power and shut them down until governments act on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.

"Leave your desk. Invite your boss. Walk out of school. Switch off the TV. Put down your phone. Get on the streets. And bring everybody."

Activist Grace Maddrell, 14, told PA on Sunday: "I'm here today because I am angry that no one is doing anything to save my future.

"I'm scared for that future and I'm here out of love for life and the animals that have gone extinct and everyone's voice that has been silenced because they were not heard in time."
