Extinction Rebellion protestors stage 'symbolic death scene' at council pensions meeting

Around 40 climate change protestors gathered outside County Hall for a 'die-in' demanding the pension fund committee sell its fossil fuel shares.

Dressed all in black, members of Nottingham's Extinction Rebellion group gathered outside the home of Nottinghamshire County Council on Thursday, September 10.

They were holding signs showing the potential causes of death from climate change, such as drowning, starvation, heat shock, and crop failure while lying down on the main entrance steps in a 'symbolic death scene'.

No roads were blocked in the demonstration which attracted around 40 people, including renowned Nottingham playwright, Stephen Lowe.

Mr Lowe said: "I've got Parkinson's, but it's important to get out to these events.

"This is the future not just for me but for my children and my grandchildren. We all have to come together in the effort for the planet.

"We have to spread this light, change the consciousness of this building and this council."

For months, protestors have demanded the county council divest from fossil-fuel related investments, arguing they are now financially risky and exacerbate climate change.

The pension fund is led by Conservative-controlled County Council, and manages the pensions of teachers, council workers and other public sector staff throughout the city and county.

In July, a political attempt was made by opposition councillors to force the council to divest.

But the Conservatives opposed this move, saying work was already underway to look at the risk involved, and that it should not be bound by restrictions.

Leora Hadas, 35, a researcher with the University of Nottingham, said: “We’re already seeing the impact of the climate crisis - wildfires in America, floods in Sudan, horrible heatwaves here in the UK. It’s like the start of a disaster movie.

"The first essential step is to transition quickly to sustainable energy sources.”
