Extinction Rebellion protesters stop traffic in Nottingham city centre during march

Climate activists Extinction Rebellion brought traffic to a standstill in the streets of Nottingham city centre as they marched to deliver letters to MPs.

The protesters disrupted city centre traffic between noon and 1pm on Thursday (June 25) in order to make the deliveries, accompanied by a loud ensemble of drums while carrying flags and banners.

The letters demand local MPs speak out about "the government's failings to reach its own climate targets."

The route began at Wellington Circus by Nottingham Playhouse at the offices of Lilian Greenwood, MP for Nottingham South and continued onto Maid Marian Way and along Upper Parliament Street ending at the office of Tom Randall, MP for Gedling on King Edward Street.

A samba band called The Band of Outlaws played during the peaceful procession as marchers kept to social distancing along the Nottingham roads.

Pictures and video taken by Nottinghamshire Live shows buses and cars being stopped on the usually busy streets as the activists made their message clear in the baking 30 degree heat - "Inaction = death".

Olympian canoeist, Etienne Stott of The Meadows took part in the walk and told Nottinghamshire Live: "The climate and ecological emergency dwarfs the Covid crisis in terms of potential for misery and suffering of the most vulnerable people around the world."

He added: "Today is a stark warning. The committee on climate change which reports on the government's progress towards climate targets has told the government that they are failing and leaving us exposed to the risks of a change of climate.

"It's really important we call out our MPs and get them to hold the government to account.

"The Covid crisis is really difficult and is causing huge issues for people and it's really hard to see it on the news but the climate and ecological emergency dwarfs it in terms of potential for misery and suffering of the most vulnerable people around the world.

"We've really got to get this message through. Time is running out.

"This is an issue that any sane, sensible or responsible person would see as a great risk to the future and the future they care about.

"It's not about left-wing or right-wing, it's about all of us being in this really difficult situation."

The protest was part of UK wide action today in which MPs will receive letters delivered by Extinction Rebellion.

Prior to the march, the group said: "With banners, drum beat and brass, the socially distanced march is happening because the government’s own Committee on Climate Change (CCC) reports today to say that the government's actions fall massively short of meeting its own legally-binding target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, a target most scientists consider to be woefully inadequate."
